Packages being kept back?
Sooner or later when you upgrade your system you would see something like:
The following packages have been kept back:
empathy mplayer mysql-server mysql-server5.0
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 4 not upgraded.
This doesn’t really impose a big problem if its your laptop. Why it happens? Well usually because the “newer” versions of those packages has unsatisfied dependencies or they need to remove something already install on your system, so they pass the ball to your court and decide whether to remove and upgrade or not.
The best way to upgrade is usually with the dist-upgrade option of apt-get, or safe-upgrade of aptitude, but you still might see such issues. So the first step would be trying either sudo apt-get dist-upgrade or sudo aptitude safe-upgrade. It might, in sometimes, solve the issue.
If it doesn’t solve the issue, do apt-get install pkg-name one by one on all packages and you might figure out something. In most cases it will be holding them because newer versions remove some other packages, like in my case mplayer‘s new version removed mplayer-nogui package.
